ASTI students spend their first two years building a foundation that prepares them to enter the College of Alameda in the 11th grade. Their classes include core science, math, english, history and writing in addition to fulfilling their physical education requirements. Once enrolled in the College of Alameda, students complete the remainder of their high school graduation requirements while also working towards completion of their IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) courses. Completion of IGETC allows a student to transfer to a CSU or UC campus with all general education requirements satisfied. Students at ASTI may also choose to take additional classes that interest them such as Psychology, Computer Programming, Art History and Physics among many others. Students can even go on to earn an Associate of Arts (AA) degree while also fulfilling their high school requirements.
While in 11th and 12th grade students also attend seminars on ASTI campus to support their college coursework. Science seminar, math seminar and english seminar are all taught by ASTI teachers and provide time to review concepts, work in groups and develop the skills and strategies needed for success at the college level. Juniors and Seniors also take Media Studies both years. This course is held in the computer lab and introduces students to a number of techniques such as Photoshop and basic web design. Students also use this course to complete their senior portfolios - a graduation requirement - and construct the yearbook. Lastly, 11th and 12th grade students take either leadership or journalism. These two courses provide students with a chance to take a leadership role in the school and plan enriching and enjoyable opportunities for their peers.
